Risin’ Star of the Month for April 2017 ~ Libby Bernard
Libby first started coming to the Ranch in October of last year and she started her training the beginning of January. When Libby first started her training she struggled with some pretty normal puppy behaviors like: jumping, pulling on the leash, and mouthing.
For starters, we began with teaching her the basic commands to help lay the foundation on which to build upon in order to address all the issues at hand. She picked up on most of her basic commands pretty quickly! Libby’s drive is to please her people, so we didn’t have to use a lot of treats to get her to perform.
Like most dogs, she did struggle a little with her downs, as well as her recall when out in the park with friends or with a lot of smells around, but we kept with it and soon she was able to work through those distractions.
Libby was also having a little trouble jumping into the back of her Dad’s truck, so in order to overcome this obstacle I brought out an agility jump for her and I worked on teaching her to go over the jump, then we transferred that behavior over to getting into the Dog Gone Waggin’, then the back seat of my car, and finally into the truck.
After we had laid the foundation with her basic commands, it came time to start on leash walking. We started inside with as little distractions as possible and she picked it up pretty quickly! When we moved to walking around on the front lawn, she struggled a little with all the hubbub that goes on out front, but we took our time and she got it down after a few sessions.
Libby and I have now started walking on the nature trails where we have more distractions (squirrels, bunnies, other dogs, etc.) and she has been doing a fantastic job at ignoring most of the distractions, and she can be walked with the leash held in one hand!
Libby, you have come a long way since you’ve started your training! We are beyond proud of all the hard work that you’ve put in! You are a very intelligent young lady with a very bright future!
Congratulations Libby on being nominated for the Risin’ Star of the Month for April 2017!
Love,

Your DSR Family
